Transforming STEM Education to Drive Europe’s Competitiveness and Social Fairness

In today’s turbulent world, Europe’s greatest asset for driving economic competitiveness lies in the potential of its people. Simply put, Europe needs to radically expand the number and expertise of highly skilled professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to keep up with the transformative forces of our times, including artificial intelligence and the green transition. For example, the STEM-skilled energy workforce must grow by 50% by 2030 to meet the rising demand for renewable energy, grid modernisation and energy efficiency technologies. Yet, at the current growth rate, these targets remain out of reach.

Recognising this urgency, the new European Commission, within its first 100 days, has launched the new union of skills to improve high-quality education, training and lifelong learning. Additionally, a dedicated STEM education strategic plan has been rolled out to expand the supply and quality of STEM skills by integrating vocational training and lifelong learning, helping to create an inclusive and adaptable workforce that is ready to drive innovation across Europe. But turning these bold new policies into visible results will require the collaborative efforts of industry leaders, educators and policymakers.

What type of education does our industry and society need today? What are the most effective strategies to deliver it in the short and long term? And how can the STEM education strategic plan achieve its goals?

At this crucial time for Europe, the Lisbon Council convenes The 2025 Skills Summit: Transforming STEM Education for Competitiveness and Social Fairness to tackle these pressing questions. The summit is convened as part of Road-STEAMer, a 14-partner consortium coordinated by the Lisbon Council and co-financed by the European Union driving the creation of a policy roadmap for science education.
