Content: Girls’ Day (Mädchen-Zukunftstag) is Germany’s largest career orientation event for girls. Held annually since 2001, over 1.5 million girls have participated. On this day, companies, research centres, and public institutions across Germany open their doors to show girls aged 10–15 careers in STEM fields where women make up less than 40% of the workforce.
The initiative is coordinated by the Kompetenzzentrum Technik-Diversity-Chancengleichheit e.V. and is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ). Participating organisations offer hands-on workshops, lab tours, and mentoring sessions, giving girls a chance to experience technical and scientific professions firsthand.
Girls’ Day 2026 takes place on 23 April 2026, with thousands of events across all 16 German federal states. It is an excellent example of a large-scale, nationally coordinated initiative to break down gender stereotypes and encourage girls to pursue STEM education and careers.
